Don Parrott Don Parrott, Jackson County 4-H'er

Retired Commissioner, Jackson County

“I developed leadership skills in 4-H, learned to ‘do for others’ and the importance of service.”

Don Parrott, a Jackson County 4-H member for five years, was a Jackson County commissioner for 12 years before he retired in 2000. As commissioner, he was an avid supporter of Michigan State University Extension programs. The community service lessons he learned in 4-H are represented by his service as an adult. He has been a Boy Scout troop and administrative leader and advisor for more than 50 years. He also served as district governor of the Lions Club, of which he was a 35-year charter member. His service has included membership for more than 50 years as a Mason and a Shriner. He also served as a member of the Jackson County 4-H Foundation.

Parrott is most proud of his involvement and contributions to the “Save the Cascades” rebuilding project in Jackson. The Cascades feature a tower hill shaped into falls with a cathedral at the top and lighted waterfalls flowing down the sides. Parrott was active in the rebuilding project that included the addition of an enclosed museum at the base of the falls. This community treasure is now open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
