Lynn R. HarveyLynn R. Harvey, Washtenaw County 4-H'er

Professor and Extension Public Policy Specialist, Michigan State University

“The skills that 4-H imparted that have been most important in my life and career were organization and meeting management. Little did I know 50 years ago that learning how to conduct meetings, organize tasks and building consensus would become daily used skills in my career at Michigan State University.”

Lynn Harvey is recognized statewide as one of the most knowledgeable leaders in the area of state and local government, and is frequently called to provide expert witness and media consultation in this area. For the past 33 years, he has worked with public officials in Michigan as a Michigan State University professor and Extension specialist specializing in political leadership training, property tax administration, budgeting and finance, and land-use planning. His Hannah Award-winning county commissioner training serves as a national model. Since 1997 Harvey has served on the Joint Public Service Advisory Board of the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments and serves on the Executive Committee of the Michigan Political Leadership Program at MSU. In September 2002 he assumed the role of acting chair for the MSU Department of Agricultural Economics.

Harvey’s community service includes 35 years as a director and current president of the Catholic Social Services board of directors. This year he is spearheading the drive to raise funds for the new St. Vincent’s Home for Children. He and his wife, Mary, are members of MSU’s Beaumont Tower Society, supporting the Michigan 4-H Children’s Garden, the WKAR Radio Talking Book program and MSU’s Wharton Center.
